Some issues can go from mildly uncomfortable to deathly serious in a matter of hours. Knowing the difference can protect your health, save your teeth, and spare you from major pain. So, how can you tell when it’s time to call your dentist right now? Keep reading for clear signs of dental emergencies that need urgent dental care.

1. Sudden Severe Tooth Pain

A mild toothache might mean something like a cavity. However, sharp, throbbing, or sudden pain is usually a sign that something more serious is going on. You could have an infection, nerve exposure, or abscess, all of which require attention with haste.

2. Swelling In Your Face or Jaw

Swelling is never normal. If your face, gums, or jaw begins to puff up, especially with pain or fever, you may be dealing with a dental abscess or serious infection. These types of issues can spread quickly and may even become life-threatening if left untreated.

3. Knocked-Out Teeth

If a permanent tooth gets knocked out, time is of the essence. Place the tooth in a container of milk (or saliva if milk isn’t available) and head straight to the dentist. The sooner your tooth is replanted, the better the chance it can be saved. In most cases, the chances of success reduce drastically after thirty minutes to an hour.

4. Cracks and Broken Teeth

Not all chips are emergencies, but if your tooth is cracked, broken, or causing pain, it’s best to seek care as soon as possible. Cracks can expose nerves, raise your risk of infection, and often worsen over time. A small crack today could be a sheared tooth tomorrow!

5. Uncontrolled Bleeding in Your Mouth

Some slight bleeding after brushing or flossing isn’t usually an emergency (though it does mark the beginnings of gum disease). But if you’ve been injured and there’s bleeding from your gums, tongue, or inner cheeks that won’t stop, get help.

You can start driving to your dentist, but if the bleeding doesn’t stop for 15 minutes or longer, head straight to the closest emergency room.

If something feels really off with your mouth, don’t ignore it. Dental emergencies can escalate quickly, and getting treated fast can make a big difference in the outcome. If you’re unsure whether your issue is urgent, call your dentist. They can help you decide what to do next—and get you in fast if needed.

About the Author

Dr. J.
